Relating to my students

In teaching, I try to relate to my students. I share life experiences that relate to the lesson. I also allow student to share stories as well. Planning is one thing that I need some work. I am always changing the way that I do things because I have not yet found the best way to do everything. One of my favorite teachers in college was always telling crazy stories about his life and relating them to the lesson. This helped me get to know him better and remember the concepts that he taught. I don’t think that a teacher has to be a minority in order to be able to relate to many different types of students. Here in the US we have many cultures all across the country. We even have different cultures within towns. Each family even creates its own traditions over years that others never even thought about. I like to learn about different traditions and old stories passed down through families. We should encourage our students to share with each other these things even if they are the same race. No one is the same.
